Net als bij mobiele telefoons, waar je met jouw mobiel in een ander land kunt bellen, omdat je op dat locale telefoon-netwerk als gast wordt toegelaten, kan dat nu ook met computers. Dat heet roaming.
Diverse Nederlandse instellingen voor Hoger Onderwijs nemen nu deel aan EDUROAM. Met Eduroam kun je, zelfs als je aan een andere instelling bent, in principe gewoon je wireless laptop gebruiken met bv Internet en je mail. Het ligt aan de gastgever of hij ook toestaat dat je applicaties van die instelling draait! Het feit dat jullie op de HES met een meegebrachte laptop kunnen werken, komt ook dankzij EDUROAM.
Je logt gewoon in met 404040 (<je studentnummer>) en je normale pincode, en je krijgt toegang. Dat toegang verlenen gaat via de zgn RADIUS-server (RADIUS= Remote Authentication Dial In User Service). In onderstaande tekening ben jij de zgn. supplicant. Die vraagt toegang tot het locale netwerk via de RADIUS-server van de bv de Universiteit van Groningen, die op zijn beurt via Internet contact legt met de RADIUS-server van de HES (waar jij studeert). Die RADIUS-servers communiceren dan met elkaar dat ze jou in Groningen toegang kunnen verlenen.
Inmiddels gaat Eduroam ook internationaal. Diverse Hoger Onderwijs Instellingen in de Verenigde Staten, in het Verenigd Koninkrijk, in diverse Europese landen, in Azië en Australië werken al met dit systeem!
Just as with mobile telephones, where you can use your phone from China or Spain in Holland or another country, because you are admitted as a guest on that local telephone network, this can also be done with computers now! This is called roaming.
Several Dutch institutions for Higher Education participate now in EDUROAM. With Eduroam you can even when you are in another institute, login on a wireless laptop to use Internet and your mail. In between Eduroam goes international. Several institutes for Higher Education in the United Sates, in the United Kingdom, in several European countries and even in Asis and Australia work with this system!
